Creative Burnout, Huskies, and the Art of Taking a Break
The Subtle Signs of Burnout
There’s a rhythm to everything — even rest.
As someone who thrives on ideas, output, and impact, burnout doesn’t always show up for me as exhaustion. Sometimes it’s more subtle. The work gets done, but it feels flat. That’s the sign: it’s time to pause.
And more often than not, it’s my huskies who remind me. They nudge the leash off the hook, urging me outside to breathe, move, and recalibrate.
Burnout Isn’t Always Loud
Many entrepreneurs think burnout is dramatic — total collapse, zero energy, projects grinding to a halt. But for creatives, burnout often sneaks in quietly:
Work feels less inspired.
Output continues, but energy is low.
Ideas don’t spark the way they used to.
These subtle signals are just as important to recognize as the big ones.
Why Breaks Fuel Creativity
Breaks don’t have to be dramatic. Sometimes it’s a long walk with the dogs. Sometimes it’s turning off notifications for a few hours. Sometimes it’s tinkering on my vintage camper, using my hands instead of my head.
Every pause has the same result: clarity.
Rest doesn’t mean laziness — it means recalibration. It’s the reset button that allows creativity to flow again.
The Hustle Myth vs. The Rest Reality
As creatives and entrepreneurs, we tend to romanticize hustle. We wear long hours and constant output as a badge of honor. But hustle without rest leads to burnout, and burnout silences creativity.
Protecting your energy is just as important as pursuing your goals. The strongest brands — and the strongest people behind them — balance drive with recovery.
Real Example: Rest as Part of the Process
When I hit a wall recently, I stepped away. Instead of forcing a campaign draft, I took the huskies for a trail walk. By the time I returned, the ideas were flowing again. The pause wasn’t wasted time — it was essential fuel.
That’s the truth: rest isn’t outside the process. It is the process.
Rest Is Part of the Job
Burnout doesn’t need to end in collapse to matter. It can show up in subtler ways — and those are the moments to listen.
At Moon & Marrow, we remind our clients (and ourselves) that rest isn’t a luxury. It’s part of the work. Because when you protect your energy, you protect your creativity — and that’s what fuels long-term impact.
